I was exposed to burn pits and air pollutants while working overseas as a civilian contractor. Am I covered under the Defense Base Act (DBA)?
Under the Defense Base Act, a civilian contractor who is exposed to any toxic substances is entitled to medical and wage loss benefits. Thousands of civilians were exposed to burn pits in Iraq. These civilians have developed respiratory injuries such as pneumonia, bronchitis, reactive airway disease, and have become disabled as a result of that exposure. In addition, because of their exposure, some of these employees have developed psychological injuries as well. Those are compensable too.
